BIOGRAPHY
Myths abound in the north when it comes to techno ground zero, and they refuse to go away. Oliver Huntemann is one of a handful of children of the north who, for what seems like an eternity, add an element of credence to the mythology. He does not, of course, live in a snowy forest or at the edge of the polar oceans. The sun does, on occasion, shine down on Hamburg. Nevertheless, there is a tendency towards hypothermic reduction in the rigorous efficiency of the Huntemann oeuvre. Images of cold storage warehouses, desolate heavy plant sites and bluish flesh are not entirely misplaced. Shards of German Engineering glimmer in his music, laced with persuasive logic, gruesome Darwin- ism. What remains: what works.

In “Brighter than the sun“, the English music theorist Kodwo Eshun depicts the birthplace of Kraftwerk, Dusseldorf, as the “Mississippi Delta of Techno“. Huntemann’s tracks may well have dragged themselves out of the same primeval soup, but it was the far north which fired them with the necessary steel for clubland. The resulting creations are linear, free of fancy, charmingly direct. One particular London arbiter of taste sought to label the nature of his skeletal sound as “bare and striped back to the metallic core“ – whereby Huntemann’s reduction does not end in thin minimalism, it draws attention to the core itself. Less is more to the max. The only luxury is a little dirt.

Whilst hordes of German producers and DJs set their satnavs for Berlin, Oliver Huntemann chose to head back home. His epicenter is, and will remain, the north. Hamburg, to be exact. This is where he produces his music and it is from here that he sets out into the world, thrilling the populous with his DJ sets.

Oliver Huntemann’s concrete roots can be traced back to early techno. Had he been any younger, he would undoubtedly have sucked electronica like mother’s milk from a C64 chip. Like so many of his colleagues, his route to techno took a tour through electro and rave. He could tell the usual vet- eran tales when it comes to influences, his first record purchases, or on the subject of the good old days. Been there, done that! It was more difficult maintaining a low profile.

Since 2014 Huntemann has been running the Ideal Senso label. A new chapter after more than five years Ideal Audio plus a host of sub and sister labels. As well as numerous 12 inches and almost as many remixes (for Underworld, Chemical Brothers and Depeche Mode, to name just a few).

Oliver’s expertly constructed productions quickly gained him countless admirers within the techno- elite, and it wasn’t long before he struck up a devastating partnership with Dubfire. In 2008 the pair released the awesome ‘Dios’ which was followed with the first parts of their ‘Elements’ series. The highly-anticipated final installment of the ‘Elements’ series is scheduled for release later in 2014 and initial reactions indicate that ‘Aqua’ is set to be just as big as the duo’s earlier productions.

In November 2011, Oliver released his fourth artist album entitled “Paranoia”. Maintaining the lofty standards already set by his previous musical output, Paranoia, received glowing reviews across the board and further cemented Oliver’s position as one of techno’s most sought-after artists. Furthermore, with guest vocals from the worldfamous and highly sought-after American Robert Owens in addition to the supremely talented Danish singer Ane Trolle, Paranoia demonstrated Oliver’s enduring skill and versatility as a producer.

In summer 2014, Oliver has been lining up the latest instalment of the hugely successful PLAY! series preceded by an EP release aptly entitled “PLAY! 05 EP – Blitz & Donner”. Oliver’s „PLAY! 05 live in Vienna“ contribution to the mix series follows in the esteemed footsteps of previous PLAY! CDs (D-Edge Sao Paolo, Rex Club Paris, Cielo NYC, Roxanne Parlour Melbourne) and has been recorded live from Austrias number one spot „Grelle Forelle“.

Spread over 2CDs, PLAY! relays the natural energy of the dance-floor and the gig, whilst also indicating that the listening experience is in the hands of an artist who has a clear vision for his musical journeys. PLAY! is an accurate representation of the music Oliver is currently playing at his DJ gigs, and the selection reminds us why he has remained relevant for more than two decades.

That’s how it is in the north, actions count, not appearances!

Abundan los mitos que apuntan hacia el Norte de Europa a la hora encajar con exactitud la zona cero donde el techno se originó. Oliver Huntemann pertenece a ese puñado de niños nacidos en dicha área y que otorgan credibilidad a estas leyendas. Tampoco nos flipemos, él no vive en la punta más extrema del Oceáno Ártico sino en Hamburgo donde alguna que otra vez brilla el solano. Vale que la música de Oliver tenga tendencia a las sonoridades gélidas, los tonos azulados y los paisajes industriales. Pero como buen ingeniero alemán a la hora de mezclar es capaz de imprimir brillo a su música, hacerla lógica y persuasiva. Un trabajo concienzudo donde como en la mismísima teoría de Darwin, finalmente prevalece aquello que mejor evoluciona.

En el libro “More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction“, del músico y teórico británico Kodwo Eshun se señala a la ciudad de Dusseldorf –cuna de Kraftwerk- como el epicentro de todo este tipo de sonoridades. Lo llegó a denominar el “Delta de Mississippi de Techno”. Los temas de Huntemann han surgido muy probablemente de los ingredientes de esa misma sopa, solo que enchufados con un poco más chicha para encarar con holgura la pista de baile. Creaciones directas y libres de adornos. En todo caso un poco de tierra por encima, suciedad bien entendida. Un crítico londinense catalogó la naturaleza de su sonido como un esqueleto de metal con un núcleo noble. Para que todos nos entendamos, el “menos es más” de toda la vida de dios.

Huntemann decidió regresar a su casa. Su foco es y será siempre, su querido Norte. Para ser más exactos la ya citada Hamburgo desde donde se encierra en el estudio para producir su particular sonido y desde donde también encara y viaja hacia cualquier rincón del mundo para hacer temblar al público con sus sets.

Para encontrar las raíces exactas del productor debemos llegar hasta los inicios del techno. Si hubiese sido un poco más joven las hubiese encontrado por ejemplo -como el que mama leche materna- trasteando con una C64. Sus primeros escarceos no fueron tampoco demasiado extraños, el techno empezó a correrle por las venas gracias al electro puro y las rave. Podría contarnos a todos las típicas historias de veterano de mil batallas de cómo entraron en su vida ese tipo de influencias, cuáles fueron esos primeros vinilos que compró o aquello de “hay que ver como estamos ahora y qué buenos tiempos eran aquellos”. Aunque con un perfil de artista más discreto él siempre ha estado ahí, en el centro del meollo.

Damos un salto en el túnel del tiempo y nos recolocamos de nuevo en este 2014, año en que Oliver ha decidido echar a andar su propio sello discográfico: Senso. Un nuevo paso en su carrera que sigue la sombra de Ideal Audio además de otra serie de subsellos… Rincón ideal para continuar su imparable tendencia de ediciones en 12” así como remixes para más nombres de la escena electrónica, ya lo ha hecho con algunos tan importantes como Underworld, Chemical Brothers o Depeche Mode, por citar algunos.

Sin duda alguna la calidad de Oliver como productor se ganó el respeto y la admiración de la élite del techno desde recién aterrizado en la industria. Tampoco pasó mucho tiempo para que entablase una alianza con el imprescindible Dubfire. En 2008 la pareja lanzó el increíble “Dios” el cual fue seguido a continuación con las primeras partes de la serie “Elements”: “Terra” y “Fuego”. El siguiente capítulo promete llegarnos a finales de 2014, todo apunta que será “Aqua” la cual huele a ese tinte poderoso y clásico de los comienzos juntos.

Por otro lado Oliver Huntemann ya lleva lanzados cuatro álbumes en solitario, el último se editó en 2011 y lleva por título “Paranoia” (anteriormente “Too Many Presents For One Girl”, “Fieber” y “H-3”). En él mantiene alto su listón y estándares musicales. El LP recibió buenas críticas en todos los ámbitos y cimentó aún más si cabe la posición de Oliver como uno de los artistas de techno más codiciados. Por otra parte, con la voz invitada del mundialmente famoso artista estadounidense Robert Owens, además de la talentosa cantante danesa Ane Trolle, en “Paranoia” Oliver demostró (aún más si cabe) su habilidad y versatilidad como productor.

Este próximo verano tiene programado continuar con la edición 05 de su exitosa serie de CDs de mezclas PLAY! Está por aterrizar “Live in Vienna” (registrada en la afamada Grelle Forelle) que viene precedido por el EP “Blitz & Donner”. Recordar que anteriormente vieron la luz las ediciones grabadas en D-Edge (Sao Paolo), Rex Club (París), Cielo (NYC) y Roxanne Parlour (Melbourne). Este “Live in Vienna” estará compuesto de 2 CDs repletos de esa particular energía que solo él sabe transmitir a la pista de baile. Baile sí, pero con una carga extra de experiencia y sabiduría. Dos décadas ya montado en un barco que nunca dejó de flotar y navegar.

Así son los chicos del norte, donde las acciones cuentan ¡no las apariencias!

Um den Norden ranken sich seit der Stunde Null des Technos die hartnäckigsten Mythen. Und wie nur wenige Kinder des Nordens trägt Oliver Huntemann seit Ewigkeiten dazu bei, dass diese Mythen ein Körnchen Wahrheit in sich tragen. Natürlich lebt auch er weder in einem verschneiten Wald noch am Rande des Eismeeres. Sogar in Hamburg scheint ab und zu die Sonne.

Dennoch verbindet sich in Huntemanns Werk unterkühlte Reduktion auf eine Art mit effizienter Härte, die Bilder von Kühlhäusern, entseelten Maschinenparks und blauem Fleisch provozieren können. In seiner Musik flirren dann wahlweise Untertöne von German Engineering, bestechender Logik und grausamen Darwinismus: Übrig bleibt nur, was der Funktion dient. In “Heller als die Sonne” bezeichnet der englische Musiktheoretiker Kodwo Eshun die Heimatstadt von Kraftwerk, Düsseldorf, als das “Mississippi-Delta des Technos”; aus dieser Ursuppe mögen auch Huntemanns Tracks entstiegen sein, aber erst der hohe Norden hat sie für das Leben im Club gestählt. Das Ergebnis sind gradlinige Geschöpfe, die ihren Charme ohne Firlefanz und Mummenschanz zum Ausdruck bringen. Eine Londoner Geschmacksinstanz versuchte mal, der Natur seines skelettierten Sounds mit den Worten “bare and stripped back to the metallic core” beizukommen – Huntemanns Reduktion verendet nie in dünnem Minimalismus, sie dient der Konzentration auf den Kern. Weniges leistet Maximales. Der einzige Luxus ist etwas Schmutz.

Während eine Heerschar deutscher Produzenten und DJs in einer beispiellosen Massenflucht nach Berlin geströmt sind, und noch immer strömen, kehrt Oliver Huntemann immer wieder in seine Heimatgefilde zurück. Sein Zentrum ist und bleibt der Norden, genauer Hamburg. Hier produziert er und von hier aus bereist er auch die Welt, um die Menschen mit seinen DJ-Sets hörbar zu euphorisieren – davon zeugt die Mix- CD-Serie „PLAY! live“. Darüber hinaus zeigt sich im Live-Mix, dass die Tonalität oder auch Gesamtästhetik seines Sets in letzter Konsequenz immer eine entsprechende Resonanz findet. Unabhängig von Ort und Raum erschließt sich seine Musik auf einer tieferen Ebene, jenseits aller bewussten Zugehörigkeiten und rationalen Zuschreibungen. Darum scheint hier auch das Publikum förmlich im Sound aufzugehen und stellenweise ein Call&Response-Spielchen mit ihm zu treiben – mehr kann sich ein DJ nicht wünschen.

Oliver Huntemanns konkreten Wurzeln finden sich im frühsten Elektro, wäre er etwas jünger, hätte er die Elektronik zusammen mit der Muttermilch aus dem Chip eines C64 gelutscht. Sein Weg ist der Weg vieler Kollegen und führte von Electro über Acid House und Rave zum Techno. Er könnte die- selben Geschichten erzählen, die alle Veteranen abspulen, wenn man sie nach ihren Einflüssen, der ersten selbst gekauften Platte oder auch einfach nach den guten, alten Zeiten fragen würde. Been there, done that! Es hat ihn nur etwas Mühe gekostet, dabei über all die Jahre sein “Low Profile” zu bewahren.

Seit 2014 betreibt Huntemann sein Label Senso, das nach mehr als 5 Jahren Ideal Audio nun ein neues Kapitel für ihn darstellt. Neben zahlreichen 12”- Releasen und fast genau so vielen Remixen (u.a. für Underworld, Chemical Brothers und Depeche Mode) veröffentlicht er im November 2011 sein viertes Album “Paranoia”. Das Album behielt die erhabenen Standards seiner früheren Produktionen bei, bekam durch die Bank begeisterte Kritiken und festigte weiterhin Olivers Position als einer der gefragtesten Techno-Künstler. Außerdem demonstriert “Paranoia” mit Hilfe der Gast- Vocals des Amerikaners Robert Owens sowie mit der außerordentlich talentierten dänischen Sängerin Ane Trolle Oliver Huntemanns dauerhafte Kunstfertigkeit und seine Vielseitigkeit als Produzent.

Olivers Produktionen brachten ihm sehr schnell zahllose Bewunderer innerhalb der Techno-Elite ein und so dauerte es nicht lange, bis er eine unschlagbare Partnerschaft mit Dubfire einging. Im Jahr 2008 veröffentlichte das Duo das fantastische “Dios”, dem die ‘Elements’-Serie folgte, welche 2014 mit Agua ihr Finale findet.

Seit 2006 bringt Oliver in regelmäßigen Abständen Episoden seiner höchst erfolgreichen PLAY! Serie auf den Markt. Sein neuester Streich „PLAY! 05 live in Vienna“ folgt den Fußstapfen der früheren PLAY! Ausgaben (D-Edge Sao Paulo, Rex Club Paris, Cielo NYC, Roxanne Parlour Melbourne) und wird live im hippsten Club der Stadt Grelle Forelle aufgenommen.

Über zwei CDs vermittelt PLAY! die natürliche Energie, die während eines Huntemann- Gigs von der Tanzfläche kommt und macht gleichzeitig klar, dass sich die Hörerfahrung in den Händen eines Künstlers befindet, der eine klare Vorstellung für seine musikalische Reise hat. PLAY! ist eine exakte Wiedergabe der Musik, die Huntemann bei seinen DJ- Auftritten spielt und die Trackauswahl erinnert uns daran, warum er seit mehr als zwanzig Jahren eine bedeutende Rolle spielt.

So ist das hier im Norden: Mehr Sein als Schein.
